The ABC’s of Starting and Monetizing a Blog
Article by Stephanie Treasure
An blog is a platform that seems to have really evolved over the years. Whether you have started a blog as an online diary to write about a hobby or yourself, or as a marketing tool to build your online presence, it makes good sense to monetize it.
This article will explore some ways that you can monetize a blog. There are 3 basic things that are necessary to have in place before you can start making money with a blog:
1. Content must be updated on a regular basis2. Your Blog needs to be promoted in order to get traffic3. Your Blog should be submitted to search engines so that it can get found on the Web
How to get started
There are so many ways to start. Beginners can start with a free blogging platform like Blogger.com via Google or WordPress.com. Free blogs usually have an extension in the name like yourblogname.blogspot.com. However, if you want ownership, more options and flexibility, then you can buy a domain name, get it hosted and use the same blogging platform for your blog.
Less is more, kind of!
Let me clarify. The less general your blog theme or topic is, the better. In other words, niche down as much as possible. The more focused and niche based your blog is, the better off for loyal readers, for search engines, for monetizing options.
Show me the money
You can monetize your blog with any of the following four programs:
Google AdsenseAffiliate MarketingEbook MarketingDirect Advertising
Google Adsense This is where you place Google Adsense Ads on your blog. You get a commission when someone clicks on the Ads on your website.
Affiliate Marketing With affiliate marketing, you can also place ads on your blog, for products related to your niche. You can also write product reviews or recommendations for products in your niche. To get started, sign up to be an affiliate for a product and place the affiliate link on your blog in a banner or in a product review.
Ebook Marketing An ebook is a downloadable electronic book, usually in a PDF format that you can write yourself and offer for sale to your readers. Your Ebook can be on a variety of subjects. I think its best to write on a topic that solves a problem for people.
Direct Advertising Once you start to get decent traffic and a good amount of readers, you can offer advertising space on your blog.Your target advertisers are people with products or services in your niche that might benefit your readers.
Blogs are fun, bottom line. Its also a great marketing tool to build your brand, build a relationship with your customers and also to build income.

From Blogging to Monetizing Your Blog (Mindset)
Article by Vanessa Reece
The road to monetizing your niche knowledge is a road less traveled by the majority of bloggers.
The first time I dipped my toe into monetizing my niche knowledge I wrote an eBook about my experiences as a Plus-Size Model; and I have to say I shudder at the way I missed every opportunity to promote it the right way.
Thank goodness I now know better!
The fact remains many bloggers are very hesitant to make money from their niche knowledge for lots of reasons. But firstly let me explain what niche knowledge is.If you write about a certain area of a subject that other people find interesting that is a niche.
For example – fashion by itself isn’t a niche – but ‘plus-size fashion’ is.
You could break that down further and say ‘plus-size dresses’ which is a very specific niche – in fact when I last ran a keyword search that term, ‘plus-size dresses’, was searched 1,220,000 times a month!
You can break the niche down as much as you like, say for instance; writing about shopping for, cheap plus-size dresses,, or selling plus-size women’s clothes on eBay. There are lots of niches and people who want to delve deeper into understanding them will happily pay for a good product where all the knowledge is there in one place.
For most bloggers their aim is to set up a few affiliate links, put them on their blog and have people click there. But as many marketing studies have shown you either need a heck of a lot of people visit your site to even hope to make any real money or you have to go crazy on your social media sites to promote the link. I like affiliates and I do put them on my sites, but I am not dependent on them as a passive income. There is a way to make to them a little more lucrative – but lets not run before we can walk.
If you have a well established blog you may find people approach you to pay for ad space. This can be very lucrative but unless you have a long fixed contract with the advertiser it cannot really be relied upon. Plus, you have to be sure to keep your blog is up to date and the traffic coming through or you may lose your sponsors. The answer is staring you in the face and trust me it took me so long to realise it too.Put your knowledge into a downloadable format, like an eBook, for sale.
Get in the right mind set first is probably the hardest part. Do you want to be a non-profit blog or have a blog that works as or for your business?
Think about it…
Positive Vibes,

Monetizing Your Blog – And Keep Total Control
Article by Gregg Brown
The main task for many people who want to write and create their own blog is to make some money from it at the same time. You can become known as an expert on a particular subject that you love by writing a blog regularly, but there is nothing sweeter than earning revenue from it as well.
Some people choose to sign up with a service that pays them for their blog posts if they write about certain services or products in a positive way. Other people don’t like using this type of service though as it means they cannot be as objective as they would like to be.
If you want to write truthfully and keep total control over your blog then your best bet is to use contextual advertising, such as Google Adsense or text links of various types. Contextual ads mean that if your blog is about tropical fish then your ads will be related to that subject as well.
You can also find affiliate products and links that will enable you to earn money for recommending services and products to your readers. Again, these should be related to the subject of your blog – and you will usually find that you get a high click through and take up rate for this kind of monetization.
The main thing to remember is that what you write will always be paramount. Don’t be tempted to fill your blog with links, recommendations and sales patter, because people will assume your main purpose of writing a blog is to make money from it. That may well be true but you need to offer real value and real content for free, to keep people coming back to read everything you write. And that will bring traffic. The more traffic the more ad revenue, whether it’s Google Adsence or selling ad space to advertisers, it’s all based people liking your content.
You also need to make sure that your blog is configured for SEO, this is very important so that your good content will get indexed by the search engines.
In the end while monetizing a blog to bring in an income is a big goal of many bloggers, you should always think of your readers above everything else. If you do that you will find your blog can really take off and bring you more regular readers, traffic and money than you might have thought.

Monetizing Your Blog – part II
Article by Milos Pesic
We’ve discussed about using Google Adsense programme and other merchants’ affiliate programmes to generate profits from your blog. However, we have a lot of other options ot monetize your blog, so we’re going to look into that today.
The first option we’ll be looking at is Chitika (www.chitika.com). Chitika is a very innovative contextual advertising programme because it can serve very detailed advertisements. For example, on your technological gadget blog, Chitika will show advertisements for tech gadgets such as iPods. The way they show it is in different tabs: one for “Best deals”, another for “details”, another for “reviews” and so on. This way, it is more of an informational section for your visitor rather than an advertisement, and naturally the click-through will be higher. You can apply here: https://chitika.com/application.php?type=mm
You can also be an affiliate for Amazon.com. Amazon offers a wide range of products but its predominant domain is in books. Whatever your niche is about, you can probably find a book about it on Amazon.com. Join their Associate programme here: https://associates.amazon.com/gp/flex/associates/apply-login.html/
Once you join them, you can refer visitors to them and earn up to 10% commission. It’s not a lot but if you can manage to refer big volumes of visitors, Amazon is for you. This programme really shines when it comes to the ways you can refer visitors: you can use their predefined templates to pull up recent items that match a certain criteria you set, you can target your ad to show a specific item on sale or you can just simply weave your referral links into your blog posts.
Last but definitely not least, you can sell advertising space on your blog if your blog is truly popular. Just take a look at blogs like http://xiaxue.blogspot.com. That blog receives over 10,000 pageviews every day and naturally merchants will want to strike a deal with the blog’s owner to post their advertisements there. If you manage to pull in huge amounts of traffic like that blog, you can definitely get people to buy ad space on your blog for prices from 0/month upwards, depending on your blog popularity. To gauge how much pageviews and visitors you get everyday, just use the free tool available at http://www.statcounter.com. They have a very detailed setup guide there so I won’t go into it.
If your blog has not acquired large amount of visitors yet, you can still sell ad space on your blog on a per click or per impression basis. Just visit sites like http://www.adbrite.com. For a complete list of these sites, visit http://performancing.com/node/60.
Hopefully, that will help you maximize earnings and profits from your blog!

Monetizing Your Blog – part I
Article by Milos Pesic
You have been working hard to produce good-quality, original content on your blog and you have attracted a decent amount of traffic by doing so. However, money is not going to appear out of thin air just because you have traffic. You have to turn your traffic into money.
There are several ways to generate profits from the visitors of your blog, and Google’s Adsense programme allows you to do so with ultimate ease. First, visit their website at http://adsense.google.com/. You’ll find out more about their advertising programme there, but here are some extra bits I’d like to tell you.
First, Google’s Adsense programme is a really useful way to monetize your blog because when users finish reading your newest post, chances are they want to leave your blog because they have nothing else to do on your blog. If your Adsense advertisement block is visible on your blog, they might see advertisements relevant to them and click on them to exit your blog. Ka-ching! You’ve just cashed in on your first virtual cents!
But yes, your profits will only be cents if you don’t “do it right”. This involves placing your Google ads in the right places and ensuring they blend in to your site so that they appear more like links rather than advertisements to your visitors. Consult the page https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html to see the “heat map” of your blog. The “hotter” a certain area, the greater the chances of someone looking at your blog.
Once you get a Google Adsense account, you can change the colour of your advertisement text and links. You will want them to match the colours on your blog. If your blog’s text is black and the links are red, do the same for the ad blocks too! It’s that simple.
Another way to earn profits from your blog is to recommend products to your readers. When your visitors buy from the merchants you recommend, you get to keep a little commission too. This is known as affiliate marketing and it is very easy to start because you don’t have to create your own products or services.
Anyway, let’s refer back to our technological gadgets blog example. Let’s say you discover this Gadget X on a merchant’s website, and they offer an affilliate programme. What you would do is to create a post in your blog and do a mini-review on this Gadget X. Rip it apart and point out its benefits and bad points, if any, and include a link (which is given by the merchant) for the visitor to purchase the Gadget X online.
If your visitor clicks and purchases the gadget, the merchant will track from the link that the purchase is referred by you, so they will send you your share of the profits. Imagine if 1 out of every 100 visitors you get purchases this product, and you earn .00 commission from each purchase! If you get 10,000 visitors in a month that would be a ,700.00 paycheque for you just for writing about ONE product.
Now, affiliate programmes are very nice ways to generate profit, but how do you find affiliate programmes that are related to your blog’s theme? Easy, just go to Google and search for <your niche> +”affiliate programmes”. Another slightly better way is to go to http://www.associateprograms.com/search to look for affiliate programmes in your niche. The two ways mentioned above are basic ways to generate profits from your blog. We’ll be discussing other great, profitable ways, so keep your eyes peeled!
